ACA ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION

How Do I Know My ACA / Obamacare Enrollment Actually Went Through?

Submitting an application or choosing a plan does not by itself mean your health coverage is ready to use. Learn how to verify your Marketplace enrollment, first premium, effective date, and insurer records.

Application submitted ≠ plan selected ≠ coverage active.

Do Not Rely Only on “Your Enrollment Is Done”

Whether you enroll on your own or receive help from an insurance agent, it is useful to know how to verify your own coverage.

HealthCare.gov says Marketplace coverage will not start until you pay your first premium directly to the insurance company. You can also use your Marketplace account and the insurance company to confirm enrollment.

How to Verify Your ACA Marketplace Coverage

1. Check Your Marketplace Account

Log in to HealthCare.gov, select your completed application under Your applications, then select My Plans & Programs.

Check which plan you are enrolled in and the coverage start date.

2. Confirm the First Premium

Your first premium is paid to the insurance company, not to the Marketplace. Coverage will not start until that first premium is paid.

Keep a payment confirmation or other record showing the payment.

3. Confirm With the Insurance Company

If you are not sure enrollment is complete, contact the insurer directly. Ask it to confirm your enrollment, first premium, and coverage effective date.

4. Check for Requested Documents

Review your Marketplace Eligibility Notice and account messages. If the Marketplace asks for documents, submit them by the deadline shown in your notice.

5. Check Your Member Information

Your plan should provide enrollment materials and member information, including access to your health insurance card.

If you have not received a physical card, do not assume that means you have no coverage. Check whether a digital card is available and contact the insurance company to confirm your enrollment and effective date.

What Does Each Enrollment Step Mean?

Step What It Means Is This Alone Enough?
Application submitted The Marketplace has your application information. No
Eligibility results received You can review what coverage or financial assistance the Marketplace says may apply. No
Plan selected You chose a Marketplace health plan. No
First premium paid The required first payment was made directly to the insurance company. Required before coverage can start
Insurer confirms enrollment The insurance company confirms your enrollment and coverage effective date. Important confirmation

What If the Marketplace Asks Me for Documents?

Some people enrolling through a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) are asked to provide documents confirming the qualifying life event. Your Marketplace Eligibility Notice tells you whether documents are required.

HealthCare.gov currently says that after you pick a plan, you generally have 30 days to submit requested SEP documents. If your notice does not say you need to submit documents, you do not need to send SEP documents.

When SEP confirmation is required, HealthCare.gov says you cannot use the coverage until eligibility is confirmed and the first premium is paid.

An Agent Helped Me Enroll. Should I Still Verify It Myself?

Yes.

An insurance agent can help explain options and assist with enrollment, but you should still know how to check your Marketplace account and confirm your coverage with the insurance company.

Even when an agent assists with enrollment, it is useful to independently verify the plan, coverage effective date, first premium payment, and any outstanding Marketplace requirements.
